A mangonada is a frozen mango drink layered with chamoy, a tangy chili sauce, and dusted with Tajín, a chili-lime seasoning. It's usually topped with fresh mango and served with a tamarind candy straw. The result is sweet, sour, salty and a little spicy all at once.

You may also see it called a chamango. It comes from Mexican street snack traditions, where fresh fruit is often finished with chili, lime and salt. At BITES Food Court + Bar in Langley Park, you can get one at SmoothieFRESH & Bubble Tea.

What's in a mangonada?

  • Mango: the base is blended frozen mango, thick and icy like a smoothie or sorbet.
  • Chamoy: a red sauce made from fruit, chili and lime. It's tart and salty with mild heat, and it's often drizzled around the inside of the cup.
  • Tajín: a chili-lime seasoning that adds a salty, zesty kick, usually sprinkled on top and around the rim.
  • Tamarind candy straw: a straw coated in chewy, sweet-and-spicy tamarind candy. You sip through it, then eat it.
  • Fresh mango: chunks on top add texture.

What does a mangonada taste like?

The first sip is cold, sweet mango. Then the chamoy brings tartness and the Tajín adds salt and a light chili warmth. The tamarind straw keeps the sweet-sour balance going as you drink. If you like mango with chili powder or lime, you'll probably like a mangonada.

Is a mangonada spicy?

A little. The heat from chamoy and Tajín is more tangy than hot for most people. If you're sensitive to spice, sip slowly at first, or start with a plain mango smoothie and work your way up.

Is a mangonada the same as a mango smoothie?

Not quite. A mango smoothie is sweet and creamy or fruity. A mangonada starts from a similar frozen mango base but adds the sour, salty and spicy layers from chamoy, Tajín and tamarind. Think of it as a mango smoothie that went to a street fair.
